Last winter, the Waterland and Hemmeland marinas were combined into a single, integrated harbor. It was a major undertaking: hundreds of boats were relocated to make way for a completely new dock layout featuring modern floating pontoons from Sweden. In addition, a natural-style breakwater, a new shipyard area, and a boat lift were constructed, complemented by a multifunctional harbor building and a new service hall.
All of this will be celebrated on Friday, August 28.
In the future, the harbour will serve as the centerpiece of Gouwhaven—a new district where approximately 700 homes are being built. This unique location is where Monnickendam’s historic old town, the green Hemmeland area, and the Gouwzee waters converge. In doing so, Jachthaven Waterland assumes a broader role within the community: as a gateway to the water, a place for leisure and social interaction, and a connecting link between the existing town and the new residential area.
“With this integration, we have not only built a marina that is ready for the future but also created a place of significance for all of Monnickendam and the municipality of Waterland,” say Nienke and Kees Wiersema, the (proud) owners of Waterland Marina.
